This morning during Question Period, Beaches-East York MPP Michael Prue attacked the McGuinty Liberal government for failing to support excellent health care in his East York/East Toronto community.
On April 1st, the TEGH physiotherapy clinic will close its doors, leaving a huge gap in service to local residents. On top of this, 118 registered nurses will be laid off.
“The blame for these drastic cuts lay squarely with the provincial government which has allowed for only a meager 1% increase in funding for this year. The people of community have lost a vital service and 118 nurses will soon see their pink slips. How is this improving health care in our community? Prue asked.
He demanded to know why, after the Minister of Health herself said TEGH was a model of excellent care unparalleled in the province, could defend these actions.
“The Minister’s lack of commitment has served to confirm that TEGH’s management will be forced to make decisions that will have negative consequences in our community. Physiotherapy services provided by clinic are still covered by OHIP. Now, many patients without private insurance will be forced to pay for their therapy. ” said Prue.
Prue has vowed to stand with the community and the health care workers to insist the government reverse its wrong-headed decision and save full service at our hospital.
