Meet Beatrice Steele, RPN, Toronto East General Hospital

Friday, May 13, 2011

Beatrice Steele Beatrice Steele (second from left), RPN, loves people. She says knowing she’s had a part in helping patients get healthy and get home is the best part of her job.

Since 2000, Beatrice has been with the Nursing Resource Team (NRT) at Toronto East General Hospital. As a member of the NRT, she’s called on to practice in nearly every area of the hospital depending on the needs of the day.

“It’s the perfect place for me,” says Beatrice. “I meet new people all the time, and moving around from department to department keeps me challenged. I never know what the next day will bring. Staying on my toes and having new experiences means I’m consistently renewing my commitment to learning and advancing my skills.”
Beatrice’s commitment to nursing doesn’t end at work. She’s also the founder of Crystal Mission International (CMI), an organization dedicated to helping children and families in the Caribbean and around the world who are affected or infected by HIV/AIDS.

“I’m a lifelong volunteer,” says Beatrice. “It’s always been important to me to contribute to my community and society. Crystal Mission International gives me a forum to put my nursing skills to work, helping people who wouldn’t otherwise have access to stable medical care.”

Since its founding 12 years ago, CMI has provided food, medication and other basic supplies to hundreds of people abroad. It’s now planning to open a home in Jamaica for the orphaned children of HIV/AIDS infected families.

One of the most important things the organization does is provide health education and training to the Caribbean community, as well as counselling and treatment services to those already living with HIV/AIDS. Through seminars, workshops and communication, CMI hopes to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in the communities it serves.

“I’m fortunate to have a good education and a meaningful job. With Crystal Mission, I have the opportunity to give back as an educator, a nurse and a friend.”
