Sudbury Seniors support home care workers
Sitting in the lobby of an independent living building in Sudbury, and the camaraderie amongst the residents is visable. They call out to each other, joke and introduce me, a home care worker.
Many are completely independent, and others require varying levels of personal care. And they are all aware of the situation with Red Cross and the impending strike. Almost all of them said, “I don’t blame them.”
“It’s awful, what they expect those girls to do, and for that money,” says one. “Where do I sign?” asks another, looking for a petition. All of them said they would rather have care in their home than go to a nursing home. “Oh, I went to visit there once and you don’t want to know the kinds of things that go on there,” says another.
This is a union town and people are not unfamiliar with strikes. Most were aware that once the PSWs go on strike that those who were deemed essential care would be looked after. No one was looking forward to being without a bath, but they said that they would manage.
“Come back and visit us again,” they called as I was leaving.
“And good luck to them – I hope they get what they want.”
